How to wear Plaid 101

After going out last night it is easy to see that PLAID is the new “it” item to wear. But not ONE person can wear it right. It really gets under my skin. Lets just say if you have a button down plaid flannel shirt Throw it away Now! Lets get rid of the Lindsey Lohan look and make something that stands out!

Fast Fix: Change the item of clothing that is plaid. Go for a plaid pleated skirt or a tight mini skirt. I also love Jumpers and shorts. Go for the school girl, library look instead of the cool indie chick look. because indie girls are out and nerds are in. But not the whole emo nerd look. Now its more about being polished and put together.

Shorts: Great with belts, Knee highs, thigh highs, and tights.

*With shorts it is really easy to create the “baggy cute” look

Skirts: Best with thigh highs and knee socks. I would stay away from tights. Vamp it up with some leg showing. High waisted is good if you can pull it off

Jumpers: This is my favorite way to wear plaid. This look goes great with hats, berets and such! Also great with turtle necks. P.S. the turtle neck is going to be one of my STAPLE items for winter. It is great to layer with dresses and looks really sleek with tight jeans and boots.

Wearing a plaid top: If you have to wear a plaid top wear it under a jacket. Make it a dress top instead of the basic flannel top. This will give it a totally different turn.

Another way to wear a top that is plaid is if it has something else to it. Like plaid with ruffles. or plaid with a western flare. The plaid top has to somehow be separated by the basic plaid. get it?

Shooting at The Meridian

Did anyone else here about that shooting at the Meridian on Friday night? The news was on in the background this morning when I woke up and I heard something about a shooting in a packed venue. Turns out it was at the Meridian. It was the Texas Thrash show supposedly, hosted by a fraternity. There were many fight breakouts throughout the night and towards the end a shooting happened in a packed parking lot. Go figure right? Only a place packed with brodudes and wannabe tough guys would lead to multiple fights and shootings. Oh, did I mention an off duty officer was shot too? but who gives a fuck about the cops? just kidding. WE LOVE HPD LOLZ

anyways here are further details I stole Ch. 2:

Timmers was shot in the right shoulder by a stray bullet as he tried to help another shooting victim, police said.”He’s not going to back down when there’s a need there, and that’s what he was doing,” said Harris County Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino.”There is no indication that the officer shot his weapon. It’s still under investigation just how many shots were fired,” said Corp. J.W. Caldwell with the Precinct 6 Constable Office.Timmers was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was released later Friday morning. He is now recovering at home. The other shooting victim was also shot in the shoulder and expected to be OK.Police said one of the bullets hit a nearby home and lodged itself in the resident’s laundry room.”I heard something. I was upstairs. I was doing laundry. I would have been dead. You just never know what’s going to happen in downtown Houston,” resident Ivan Rocabado said.Timmers was an officer in the animal cruelty division for over a decade. He has appeared on KPRC Local 2 numerous times in that role. He has been with Precinct 6 for nearly 15 years.Deputies said they believe the shooting stemmed from a fight inside the concert hall that spilled into the parking lot. Detectives questioned numerous people, but they were later released. No arrests have been made.

So to all the brodudes and brohos out there, keep on wearing your Assfliction or Confliction shirts and fighting everyone in plain sight. You might as well go shoot randoms too. Hell, that’s what you do best, keep up the work because everyone loves your stupid drama.

Jefferson Adams

There was a post written a week back, about our “new” authors, well there was one that has been with us from the beginning that didn’t make that “new” list. One that has been bringing us amazing artists and delightful words. You can tell because his posts are like none listed on this site. You will get the most effort and compassion out of these well thought out pieces from Jefferson, This literature major and producer to the stars keeps us up to date on the original and soon to be vintage story line along with song. Justin aka Jefferson Adams controls more than just the music and vintage aspect of this web site. Jefferson is also a major key role in our development and the back end of what makes this site work. If it wasn’t for Justin our SMS may have never came to light. We remember our nights of long PHP and HTML support. and we love you Justin, You are definitely not overlooked. We at HMH are proud to have you on our team, and hope to see more and more from you as our family grows.

Keep on the lookout for this guy, in words, and in production.

Thanks for everything Justin.

Black Friday: Music To Shop To

Punchout, Literally

First up we have the product of some hot Brazil on Brazil action. Brazilian producers, Database, have a new baile funk version of their track Miami that originally hit the blogs back in September. The original Miami featured a sample of Bonde Do Role’s hit Miami Beach. The vocals are still present, albeit chopped up and accompanied with bouncy samba drumming. The baile funk remix sounds so “below the equator” those of you suffering through the coldest winter (obligatory Kanye reference) may thaw out a little.

Database – Miami ft. Bonde Do Role (Baile Funk Mix) [YSI]

English producers Punks Jump Up are possibly my favorite artists who don’t release enough new material. They released their spectacular single, Dance To Our Disco, on Kitsune way back in March of 2007 and since then they’ve been rocking DJ shows and stringing along their fans with awesome remix after awesome remix. As if they could feel the anticipation of their fans reaching an apex, they’ve decided to spend the months of December and January in studio working on new material. Until their new stuff hits the blogs you must continue to be strung along with remixes. Here is their remix of Tronik Youth’s We Are

Tronik Youth – We Are (Punks Jump Up Remix) [YSI]

Ulysses S. Trooper

And finally, I have an assortment of housey tracks I’m listening to today. The first track by College is more of the future 80s dance music we’ve come to know and love from any artist associated with Valerie. The Moulinex remix of Fantasy Park is included on Secret Diary, the new album from College. You can purchase Secret Diary here. Good Life, released in 1988 by Inner City, is an artifact when measured in blog years and the new remix from Matty C, which hit the Blogosphere two days ago, is at least three weeks old. The Matty C remix is part of the new Quarter Water EP, a collaboration between him and DJ Ayres. The EP is full of like minded house remixes from the two producers. Pick it up here. True Pseudo’s remix of Mt.SimsThe Bitten Bite Back is a remix to behold. I’ve never heard of either of these artists before, but after one listen to this remix I want more. Six minutes of distortion, driving bass, and awesome synths, True Pseudo throws together multiple dance music elements and creates a track which dares you not to dance.

Winter Family

Where Have You Been My Boy?

Winter Family

Hailing from Jaffa, Israel this hauntingly original duo combines the efforts of poet Ruth Rosenthal and French musician Xavier Klaine.  The pair create minimal melodies utilizing harmoniums, organs, and pianos punctuated by Rosenthal’s dark and dynamic poetry, offering reflections on childhood, war, and religion.  Their first effort, a double disc released by Sub Rosa in September of 2007, laid the frame for their March 2008 release, entitled Where Have You Been My Boy?  [Marienbad Records]

Winter Family, Where Have You Been My Boy?, Indie Blog, Indie Music

The 2008 release contains only two original tracks, Omaha and Shooting Stars.  Unfortunately, we are, at this point, unable to provide these two tracks due to the scarcity of information about Winter Family.  (No, they’re not even on Wikipedia.)  So, for these two tracks, checkout La Blogotheque’s Take Away Shows here.

However, back to the sound of Winter Family, you’ll notice on the first listen the ambiance created by varied recording spaces.  The tracks were recorded in three apartments, a church, and even a parking lot.  This variety of environments lends itself to the ethereal nature of their sound, offering a spatial experience to the audio, reminiscent of experimental jazz recordings from the sixties.

I’d like to tell you that Winter Family’s Where Have You Been My Boy? will enjoy some critical or even commercial success but alas, it likely will not.  Information on the band is scarce, their following is doomed to be small.  However, those of you that will enjoy it, will enjoy it immensely as I have.

On the Subject of Double Posting

Bridge Club Meeting

My friend who runs the wonderful blog We Wore Masks called me out today for double posting, posting the exact same post on two different blogs, on Sunday. I guess the Blogosphere consensus is adverse to the idea of double posting. But come on guys, I barely complete enough posts to fulfill my once-a-week post agreement with Adify, there is no way I can keep up with two blogs. So to make the two posts different I’m gonna include an extra piece of punctuation on one of the posts. It will be your job to find out which post has the extra punctuation. It’s like Where’s Waldo, except way less fun. Was Where’s Waldo even fun to begin with?

I’ve been a fan of Housemeister ever since hearing Inordertodance back at the beginning of the summer. The beat so steady, the synths so hypnotic. The track is a wonderful template for producers to remix. Thankfully blog elder statesman, Boys Noize, has made a new remix. Boys Noize creates a song with greater variation while keeping the steadiness that makes the original so great. Do the right thing and purchase the remix here.

Melted Ice Cream

The Bag Raiders remix of By the Time They Reach You, as umeabeat puts it, is few blog years old, but if you’ve never heard it, its new to you right. With the barrage of releases from Bag Raiders and Bang Gang Records in the past month, it only makes sense that the blog community is gathering up as much Bag Raiders as they can. If you’re missing this remix from your Bag Raiders collection, you can pick it up below. I won’t charge you this time.

Make You Mine is the second single off of Miami Horror’s Bravado EP to hit the Blogosphere. If you don’t have their first single Don’t Be On With Her, download it here. NOW! I’m sorry I rose by voice with you, but these tracks are that good. Disco-pop at its finest. If you don’t download Make You Mine, I will find you, and upload it into your iPod during the night. You can pick up the whole EP on their myspace page.

No Age

So I’ve had this record for months, I didn’t think much of it at first.  It was a process of talking myself  in to and out of liking it — one of those records that’s good but you turn it on and think that you’ve heard it before.  Though, today…this record is gorgeous.

Lets review the facts:

  1. Its Monday.
  2. I’m hungover.
  3. I put on a record I haven’t heard in awhile.
  4. The record is No Age’s Nouns. [Sub Pop, May 2008]
No Age - Indie Blog

No Age is one of those DIY LA bands that plays at The Smell with the likes of Mika Miko or BARR.  To say that they break the glass ceiling on that whole scene isn’t entirely true.  They fall into a noise pop/LA/DIY/whatever genre as easily as any of the bands associated with that scene but they sound really good doing it.  Perhaps more importantly, that’s part of their allure.  They sound so bloody familiar but standout due to a simply brilliant execution of the concept.  It may be ephemeral, sure, but it sounds just right and who can argue that?  We’ll see this band typify that scene, while most of the others end up disposable records and zeitgeists enjoyed by only a handful of people.

To be sure, its a perfect listen for a hungover Monday.  Its a perfect listen for Friday night.  Honestly, its a perfect listen whenever and damn close to a perfect record.  Now, let’s get them to a Houston party.
