YO HOMEY, THAT DUB-STEP REMIX YOUR MOM DID FOR HMH IS FIRE
IMAGINE how tough it must have been to do remixes back in the day. What the hell did they even use? Reel to reels and shit? Where would you even begin doing a simple edit with an eight track, let alone a reel to reel? Ya’ll don’t realize how lucky we are today: banging out a dope mix is as easy as opening up Ableton (or some other inferior software) and getting spunky with the beat repeat and flanger. So since everyone you know is a producer these days, I can’t wait to review the absurd number of entries we’re about to receive for the FIRST EVER HOUSTON’S MOST HATED REMIX CONTEST!
That’s right guys, we’re throwing down the challenge and ya’ll officially on notice. Naturally, we’re keeping the subject matter homegrown this time: Houston’s very own synth pop dark horse Glasnost is on the operating table and we wanna hear you guys run wild. And on the real, this isn’t one of those tired-ass “here’s an accapella ” remix contests you see everywhere these days. We got the MP3s and stems from three of our favorite Glasnost jams below and we’re calling down the thunder H-motherfuckin-M-H style on this one.
(SPOILER ALERT!!! IF ANYONE IS FEELING BALLSY AND WANTS TO DO A REMIX WITHOUT HEARING ANY DESCRIPTION AT ALL, STOP READING HERE AND GO RIGHT CLICK THE STEMS AT THE BOTTOM)
In case you’re not up on the ‘nost, their OG sound is uptempo and sounds kinda like Steve Aoki watching an adulterous affair between the Killers and Interpol at 130 BPM. Yeah, that description is an attempt at being cute but it also gives me some wiggle room because the three songs you guys get to choose from definitely keep it real. “Come Alone” is a funky, bass-heavy speed walk down a damp dark alley, “Static” is kinda like a Bossanova era Pixies Jam with synths, and “The Great Divide” is a straight up anthemic dance popper that Bloc Party wish they could write. Luckily, their overall sound and production quality are versatile enough so that while I’d probably drop a nu-rave freak out bomb Le Castlevania would be proud of, I better get to hear some dripping-wet syruppy chop-ups and old school East Baltimore Club bangers. And I know we got at least a couple progressive house sound boys out there dying to get grandoise on some eight minute long epic shit. Damn, I’ll bet someone even has a world beat track coming our way.
The deadline for submissions is Friday the 13th of February and on the 14th, we’ll drop a big ass zip file or something on the site and let readers start voting. But since ya’ll can’t be trusted, half of the score is going to come from our panel of celebrity judges that will include well-known DJs, writers, musicians and other assorted industry riff-raff from across all genres.
So get cracking because in addition to the hardcore internet props you’ll undoubtedly receive, we’re putting the winner on center stage during our banging-ass SXSW party to premiere the track and whatever else he or she has cooked up. And with the star-studded affair we’re putting together, that’s a hell of a time slot. Shit, careers have been made on less.
Grab the stems, peruse the offical rules below, and keep on hating. Holla!
Here are the songs you have to choose from.

WTF?! Heirplanes is a new song from Lupe Fiasco’s indie rock side project, Japanese Cartoon. The song itself is good enough but that’s not why I’m posting it. The reason I’m posting Heirplanes is because of Chicago-born Lupe Fiasco’s terrible faux British accent. Even British people don’t sound that British when they sing. Why does he insist on sounding out each “i” as an “ie”. But don’t take it from me only, below I’ve also included Space And The Woods by English dance punk rockers Late of the Pier. Listen to both songs back to back and you’ll see what I’m talking about. First it was Madonna, then Britney, now Lupe. WTF?!

Ungdomskulen is a lo-fi, power pop trio from Norway. Their name, which looks and sounds like the name of a character from Lord of the Rings, roughly translates to “junior high school” in English. Using tons of reverb, Ungdomskulen creates seven minute musical expeditions that defy the limitations of only having three band members. Throughout most of the album, they are in full stoner rock mode, intertwining bass rhythms, guitar riffs, drum loops and the occasional cowbell for three or four minutes straight without any vocals. The pop part comes into play whenever lead singer Kristian Stockhaus sings melodies with his high pitched metal wail. Unlike most of his fellow Scandinavians, Kristian’s voice and singing style allows listeners to catch every word for sing-a-longs during repeat listens. If you only download one of the three songs below, please make it Spartacus. Once you hear drummer Øyvind Solheim’s frantic yet focused drum work, combined with the dueling guitars of Kristian and bassist Kvinge Flatland, you will want more Ungdom.

New discocentric Far Away remix from The Golden Filter.
Here Comes A New Challenger!
Oh shit! It’s a funk battle. Who is more disco?! The Golden Filter remix or the Hercules & Love Affair remix? I don’t know which song will win this disco remix battle but no matter which artist wins you know who really wins? That’s right Dionne Warwick. Wait a minute, I mean, we all win.

When I saw that Discobelle and IHEARTCOMIX received the new EP #4 from Meterhead yesterday I was downtrodden to say the least. I mean, I’ve been down with Meterhead from the get go, where was my EP I thought. Well, apparently their email was simply lost in the shuffle, I received the EP today. You know how this email thing works, sometimes the emailman loses a package or two, takes the wrong exit on the information superhighway, stops by a couple of porn sites. No biggie…..which is a brilliant segue to talk about my favorite track off of Meterhead’s new EP, Biggie Dance. On Biggie Dance, Meterhead remixes a hip hop classic with their signature banging electro style. Big bass, big synths, awesome breakdowns. The Hardcore Girls electric-disco remix is nothing you would expect (but still great), the Blue Monday cover is everything you would expect (but still great), and if Rick Astley’s soulful voice is anywhere in Rick Rollin, I got rick rolled.

* Sorry Paul (and everyone else who likes direct mp3 links), but I just couldn’t figure this FTP shit out. I need another tutorial.

First up we have the product of some hot Brazil on Brazil action. Brazilian producers, Database, have a new baile funk version of their track Miami that originally hit the blogs back in September. The original Miami featured a sample of Bonde Do Role’s hit Miami Beach. The vocals are still present, albeit chopped up and accompanied with bouncy samba drumming. The baile funk remix sounds so “below the equator” those of you suffering through the coldest winter (obligatory Kanye reference) may thaw out a little.

English producers Punks Jump Up are possibly my favorite artists who don’t release enough new material. They released their spectacular single, Dance To Our Disco, on Kitsune way back in March of 2007 and since then they’ve been rocking DJ shows and stringing along their fans with awesome remix after awesome remix. As if they could feel the anticipation of their fans reaching an apex, they’ve decided to spend the months of December and January in studio working on new material. Until their new stuff hits the blogs you must continue to be strung along with remixes. Here is their remix of Tronik Youth’s We Are.
Tronik Youth – We Are (Punks Jump Up Remix) [YSI]

And finally, I have an assortment of housey tracks I’m listening to today. The first track by College is more of the future 80s dance music we’ve come to know and love from any artist associated with Valerie. The Moulinex remix of Fantasy Park is included on Secret Diary, the new album from College. You can purchase Secret Diary here. Good Life, released in 1988 by Inner City, is an artifact when measured in blog years and the new remix from Matty C, which hit the Blogosphere two days ago, is at least three weeks old. The Matty C remix is part of the new Quarter Water EP, a collaboration between him and DJ Ayres. The EP is full of like minded house remixes from the two producers. Pick it up here. True Pseudo’s remix of Mt.Sims’ The Bitten Bite Back is a remix to behold. I’ve never heard of either of these artists before, but after one listen to this remix I want more. Six minutes of distortion, driving bass, and awesome synths, True Pseudo throws together multiple dance music elements and creates a track which dares you not to dance.
